Abstract

In this talk we will review the recent advances that have taken place in both materials and third generation photovoltaic devices, as well as the new approaches in development, that goes from thin film devices to multilayer concentrating systems allowing efficiencies higher than 45%.
The present concepts involved in thir evolution, such as intermediate band materials, theoretically able to reach efficiencies near the thermodynamic limit, and UP and DOWN energy converters through suitable phosphors that allows to fit the solar spectrum to the absorber characteristics will be revised.
Finally, we will describe the last achievements in hybrid perovskites solar cells. Perovskite solar cells have been recently emerged as a new type of photovoltaic technology well suited to become a generalized technology for clean energy generation in the near future due to their low cost and exceptional performances. Numerical techniques aim at the simulation of these kind of devices will be discussed.
These devices started their progress from the concepts of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) also known as Gratzell solar cells, but nowadays they are following their own particular evolution. The common techniques used to grow this kind of materials as well as the last results obtained in our own lab will be presented.
